
Substitute Teaching
To substitute teach in Wyoming, you must apply for a Substitute Teacher Permit. This permit is valid for five years and is eligible for renewal.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: To avoid delays in processing your application, please read the instructions, complete all sections and submit all required documents. Incorrect or incomplete applications will delay processing and may lead to its cancellation.
There are two ways to meet the requirements for a substitute teacher permit.
College Credit Path
- Complete at least 60 semester hours or an associate’s degree from an accredited college/university
- Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution exams
- Submit fingerprints and received a clear background check
- Submit an online Classroom Substitute Permit application
- Request official transcripts from institution be sent electronically to PTSB as part of the application process.
Alternative Path
- Hold a high school diploma or GED
- Complete at least 24 hours of school district in-service training
- Complete at least 30 hours of classroom observation (10 hours must be completed at EACH level: elementary, junior high/middle, and high school.)
- Successfully complete the US and Wyoming Constitution exams
- Submit an online Classroom Substitute Permit application
In order to renew a substitute teacher permit, you must have earned two (2) semester hours of transcript credit or 28 hours of other professional development credit as approved by PTSB and submit a Renewal Application to PTSB before the expiration of your current permit.
There are several options for earning renewal credits:
- Complete course work at a regionally accredited college/university. You may take courses for either a grade or pass/fail
- Attend PTSB approved workshops
- Apply for Individual Professional Development credits
Renewal application for Classroom Substitute Permit.
In order to reinstate a lapsed substitute teacher permit, you must have earned two (2) semester hours of transcript credit or 28 hours of other professional development credit as approved by PTSB. The alternative path is not available as an option for reinstating a lapsed substitute permit if the alternate path was previously used to obtain the initial substitute teacher permit.
