Professional Industry Career (PIC) Permit

A Professional Industry Career (PIC) Permit is valid for five years. An individual who holds this permit is eligible to teach grade levels 6-12 only in the field(s) of the occupational specialty for which the applicant has met all requirements.

Permit Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum two years of work experience for EACH field of occupational specialty for which the applicant is seeking a PIC. Work experience must exclude any educational training the applicant may have obtained in his/her field of occupational specialty.
  • Verification of Employment Forms (found in the application) for EACH field of occupational specialty in which the applicant is seeking a PIC must be filled out completely and accurately and submitted as part of the complete application packet.
  • Current and valid license(s) in EACH of the applicant’s occupational specialties when one is required by state or federal statutes.
  • Plan for Continued Professional Advancement.

Additionally, a Bachelor’s Degree, or higher degree, in the specific discipline is required for applicants seeking a permit in:

  • Agriculture
  • Business
  • Family and Consumer Science

Additional licensure options with PTSB for PIC Holders

  • Option #1
    • An individual who has held a valid PIC Permit for at least ten (10) years and who holds a bachelor’s degree or higher may be eligible to apply for a Standard Educator License with the appropriate endorsements by providing verification of continuous teaching employment for ten (10) years or more. These individuals will need to complete our application for Initial Licensure, found on our website, with the verification of at least ten (10) years of continuous teaching employment.
  • Option #2
    • Individuals who hold a valid PIC Permit who have not completed at least ten (10) years of experience, and who wish to apply for a Standard Educator License must complete the following courses or the equivalent, at a minimum, from an accredited institution to be eligible to obtain a Standard Educator License:
        • Foundations of development and learning, or a combination of introductory psychology and developmental psychology
        • Foundations of education, or diversity in public schooling
        • Introduction to special education
        • Methods of instruction to include classroom management
    • Once the above courses have been completed, an individual will need to complete our application for Initial Licensure, found on our website, and provide official transcripts that reflect the completed courses.

Renewal Requirements:

  • Requires a valid professional license when one is required by state or by federal statutes for the occupational specialty.
  • Requires a written “progress report” of the Professional Advancement Plan submitted for the initial permit.
